THE WONDERS' single hit vocal, "That Thing Y'all Do!" peaked at Number 2 on the charts in August of 1964. Recorded in five takes in a church in Erie, Pennsylvania two months earlier, the record unmistakably captures the raw, springing power of a band that could have gone places. "That Thing" and its B-side "All My Only Dreams," recorded in 1 have the same dark, became the fastest rising tape in the history of the Play-Tone label considering the combination of James Mattingly'south lead song and rhythm guitar, Lenny Haise'south spirited guitar solo, a steady bass line, and the solid heartbeat of Guy Patterson's drums brand a record far better than it should take been. This happens sometimes.

The surprising talent of The Wonders was just as evident alive equally it is on this, the band's only record. Every bit last infinitesimal additions to the Play-Tone Milky way of Stars, The Wonders thrilled crowds throughout the mid-west with a set up of songs that grew past, literally, public demand. With the and then state-of-the-art Clavius Chiliad-135 Portable Recording system (with Quad Yoshikawa Microphones and a Floating Element Carbonite Tape) two other songs past The Wonders were recorded live during an afternoon show at the Illinois State Fair in late July 1964. Forth with other records from the period and from the Play-Tone Stable of Artists, they have been digitally re-mixed, re-mastered, and augmented peculiarly for the CD or Cassette you now concur.

"Dance With Me Tonight" features Lenny Haise on Atomic number 82 Vocal, a step up from his usual duties of background and harmony. Listen for the new Rickenbacker twelve-string, the much improved T.B. Player on a Fender Jazz Bass, and Guy Patterson's ferocious percussion.

"Little Wild One" opened the set, with James Mattingly roofing the Theodore Truman striking of the summer before.

"Lovin' You Lots And Lots" was an case of the Norm Wooster sound that had been languishing deep in the Height 100 until, somehow, the bouncy tune caught on. Adults, perhaps needing a howdy-fi antitoxin to the British Invasion, bought enough copies to brand the song Number 1 the very week "That Affair You Practice!" dropped from the Top 10.

"Theme from Mr. Downtown" tells the story of the 1957 television programme, Detective Sergeant 'Shake' Lovell, so haunted past the murder of a expert friend, has go an insomnia-riddled denizen of a big metropolis's jazz society scene. Freddie Fredrickson was riding high on the success of "Mama, Tell Me Mama" when he recorded this version at the Play-Tone East Studios in New York City, January 1960.

"Concur My Manus, Hold My Centre" needs no introduction. The Chantrellines had been shining bright in the Play-Tone Galaxy of Stars since the release of "Try To Shake Me Up" (April 1962) correct up until the trio went their dissever ways in 1970. This song was recorded over three days early on in 1964 at the Discmaster Studios in Hollywood by producer/arranger N.D. Horne – another masterwork of his overdubbing technique.

"Voyage Around The Moon" is another of Micky Piccirillo's trademark Ignition Guitar trips, coming out of his home turf, the embankment towns of fundamental Florida. The only permanent member of the Saturn v, Micky powered the band through marathon 1-day recording sessions that ordinarily produced an LP jammed with peppery instrumental hits. Recorded August 4, 1963 at the Platterland Studio in Los Angeles for Play-Tone Records, which provided the cheeseburgers and beer.

"My Globe Is Over." Diane Dane had five Summit Ten Singles including the boom "Morning For Mourning," three hit LPs and her own short-lived television set diverseness prove, making her not only the reigning queen of Teenage Sob Songs merely also Play-Tone Artist of the Year in 1959. Though absent-minded from the charts since 1962 with "Hurry Summer Lord's day," this record returned Diane to the Top twenty for iii weeks.

"Shrimp Shack" is from the movie Weekend At Party Pier and is near notable for the saxophone solo of Lewes Collins, formerly of The Storms, who played on all those great Chester Wilson tunes for Snap Records.

"Bulldoze Faster" was yet another car song by The Vicksburgs, who took their name from their hometown in Tennessee. Transplanted to Glendale, California, the quartet recorded many hubcap hits like "Adjust The Choke," "Devil's Drag Race," and "Talkin' Tachometer" before reaching a band-best Number 3 on the charts with this song. Recorded on the OdemO Label.

"Fourth dimension To Blow" is an experience, as is hearing any Del Paxton composition. Produced past C.W. Torgerson with Bobby Washington on drums, Rich Chew on bass, and old pal Eric Chase Falcon on guitar, "Time To Blow" is unquestionably i of the seminal jazz recordings of 1958, a companion piece to his ain "Live From The Philadelphia Jazz Junction" of the year before. Never one to avowal or brag, Del told Anne Bethlize of Jazz Chronicle Magazine that "Time To Blow" turned out so good "…that fifty-fifty I like information technology." So do nosotros, Del Paxton! So practise we!

"She Knows It" was James Mattingly's outset hit record with The Heardsmen, recording for the Play-Tone Milky way of Stars after an aborted alliance with the DevaCart Label produced two non-selling solo efforts. The new band was actually a rotating drove of sidemen hired as needed by Mattingly who not only wrote all Heardsmen tunes, but who then moved smoothly into the producer's booth for himself and many other Play-Tone Artists.

Included is an added bonus – the very last functioning of The Wonders and their signature song, taken from the live broadcast of the Hollywood Idiot box Showcase. From the City of Broadcasting in Santa Monica, California, this cut has Scott 'Wolfman' Pell in for T.B. Player on bass.

Enjoy,
